Community Project:
Kai Fong Pai Dong

”Yau Ma Tei Neighbourhood Portraits” is one of my community art project. I found that ‘Pai Dong’ (street market stall made of green sheet metal) is a good public space for neighbours to gather and chit chat. However the number of pai dongs has drastically dropped because the government has stopped issuing licenses in recent years. I decided to engage the community by drawing portraits for the people passed by the pai dong, and record their stories.

Due to the removal of the pai dong, I printed 100 portraits on a giant banner and used it to wrap the pai dong. Additionally, I organized an ad-hoc exhibition before the day of removal, as a way to protest and try to stop the clearance work.

I met the surrounding neighbourhoods during the time I spent in the pai dong. They painted me portraits, sent me food, helped me to have a foot massage, I also invited other musicians to hold a Lunar New Year concerts and organised Christmas parties together.

100 portraits Exhibition

The exhibition at Green Wave Art,  I selected this community art exhibition venue and invited the participated neighbours to retrieve the works and get to know everyone. I brought the 100-people-portrait banner to the parade as a way to attract neighbourhoods.
